About Jewish Big Brothers and Big Sisters

Jewish Big Brothers * Big Sisters of Los AngelesThe mission of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA) is to assist youth in achieving their full potential through innovative, impactful programs that facilitate lasting mentoring relationships and support positive development.  JBBBSLA runs community-based mentoring programs, offers college scholarships, and owns and operates Camp Bob Waldorf on the Max Straus Campus, a 112-acre residential camp and retreat center in the Verdugo Hills of Glendale.

JBBBSLA assists Jewish boys and girls ages six and older in need of a role model by matching the children with a mentor that fits their interests, strengths, and needs. The duo—called the big and the little—spend two days out of every month together, enjoying activities that surround education, culture, or recreation. The program is free and professionally supported, and all bigs are thoroughly checked and proven to be trusted Jewish volunteers.

Although the volunteers only commit to one year of mentoring, it is common for the big and little to bond for a lifetime, and most never leave each other’s lives, even as both get older.

In addition to the mentor program, JBBBSLA also hosts workshops called Thrive, which include fun activities with teenagers that focus on teen wellness; plan events, including their annual golf tournament; and host a camp, called Camp Bob Waldorf, for kids from low-income families to enjoy a 10-day camp session that helps with their self-esteem and characters. The camp also provides them with three healthy meals a day, games, new clothes and shoes when needed, and a chance to enjoy sports, music, art and technology.
